KBA

Also called: Knowledge-Based Authentication

An identity-proofing technology used in Remote Online Notarization. The signer answers a dynamic set of multiple-choice questions drawn from public records (prior addresses, vehicles, etc.). The signer must answer at least four of five questions correctly within two minutes to pass.

KBA is one of two identity proofing methods required for RON in Pennsylvania. The other is credential analysis — automated verification of a government-issued photo ID. Both must be performed in every RON session unless the signer is personally known to the notary (and even then, other RULONA requirements apply).
