Jurat
Also called: verification upon oath
A notarial act in which the signer personally appears, is identified, and swears (or affirms) before the notary that the statements in the signed document are true. The notary's certificate confirms both the oath and the signature.
Jurats require an oath or affirmation — the signer swears to truthfulness. Acknowledgments require only that the signer confirm the signature. If the document contains the words “sworn to before me,” it’s a jurat. If it contains “acknowledged before me,” it’s an acknowledgment.
