Errors & Omissions Insurance

Also called: E&O insurance, E and O

Professional liability insurance covering a notary's clerical mistakes, failure to follow procedure, and legal defense costs. Not required by PA law, but universally recommended because the mandatory $25,000 surety bond protects the **public**, not the notary.

Without E&O, a notary who makes a reasonable mistake has no insurer to defend them and no insurer to pay any damages award. The bond will pay the claim up to $25,000, then the surety bills the notary personally. Typical E&O policies cost $25–$100 for a 4-year term at $100,000 coverage; for RON or loan-signing practice, $250,000 coverage is advisable. See Do PA notaries need E&O insurance?
